Action plan

ICES is developing a new training system and has developed a Training in ICES: action plan 2009-2010.

The ICES training system should be a distributed system that links in to national expertise on teaching (national institutes, universities) and will add to existing training programs. The ICES training program should not compete with existing national universities and institutions but should rather fill the gaps of marine scientists operating in the advisory process.

Training courses can be either held at the ICES headquarters or at another location to be organized by ICES Secretariat and the course instructors. All training courses should be made available through internet, so that distributed learning could also be an option.

Courses for 2009 and 2010

The training committee has identified the following courses for 2009 and 2010 but is open for further suggestions by the ICES Science Committee. Further to that, the list will be continuously reviewed:

  • Advice context, content and communication (scientific writing and presentation skills, reaching out to the wider public)

  • Chairing of advisory (expert) groups (handling stakeholder participation, conflict resolution)

  • Management Strategy Evaluation (including FLR)

  • Stock assessment (introduction and advanced)

  • Bayesian techniques for stock assessment (including communication of results)

  • Survey design and evaluation

  • Oceanographic software and modelling

  • Technical methods (e.g., plankton identification and age reading)
