ICES Symposia
Symposia are an important part of the ICES work programme, not
least because they foster the broadening of the diversity of scientists
who participate in ICES activities. ICES welcomes proposals for
stimulating symposia on topics that are fundamental to the science
components of the ICES Strategic Plan (PDF
document), including (a) understanding the physical, chemical,
and biological functioning of marine ecosystems, (b) understanding
and quantifying human impacts on marine ecosystems, including living
marine resources, and (c) evaluating options for sustainable marine-related
industries, particularly fishing and mariculture.
If you would like to find out about Symposia in any particular
year please use the menu on the right.
ICES explicitly encourages the science community to develop plans for symposia and to engage ICES in new disciplines of marine science.
Guidelines for Conveners
ICES requires that Conveners of Symposia held under its auspices
follow established procedures. An explanation of these procedures
is contained in Guidelines
for Conveners of ICES Symposia.
Please contact us by mail to obtain ICES logos to be used in symposia material (websites, brochures, posters).
Publishing results from Symposia
Proceedings of ICES Symposia are, in principle, to be submitted to the ICES Journal of Marine Science for consideration before any alternative publication arrangements are made. The ICES Journal, under contract with Oxford University Press, usually publishes three volumes of proceedings each year, as soon as possible after the symposia in question. ICES Marine Science Symposia (MSS), the Council’s proceedings series for many years, was incorporated in the Journal in 1995. The Guidelines for Guest Editors can be found here: IJMS Guest Editor Guidelines.
