Mnemiopsis – invading the northern Baltic

The invasive comb jellyfish Mnemiopsis leidyi first seen in the southern Baltic Sea in 2006 has now been observed in abundant concentrations in the Åland and Bothnian seas. The extreme adaptability of this species allows it to reproduce under cold conditions, in the deep waters and the small sizes. Since it has probably come to stay we now need to understand more about its significance in the nutrient system of the Baltic Sea.

Theme Session O  "Flying outside the ICES Assessment WG paradigm – Alternative approaches to providing fisheries management advice".

The background to the Theme Session is that ICES Assessment Working Groups are frequently seen as having analytical assessments using catch at age data as their goal, but this approach may not be appropriate in relation to providing ecosystem or community advice or, for example, for stocks which are data poor or where individuals cannot be aged.  Presentations at this theme session covered three themes of alternative assessment methods and models for single stocks ranging from the use of indicators to stock assessment models, fishers involvement in relation to knowledge and objectives, and alternative approaches to management.
