SCICOM Business Group
In May 2010 SCICOM created a “Business Group” recognizing the collective responsibilities of a number of SCICOM members over and above their statutory obligations. The Business Group does not reduce the responsibilities of SCICOM as the ICES decision-making body on science matters. The responsibilities of the Business Group are to assist the SCICOM Chair in matters regarding the implementation of SCICOM decisions, and in preparation of business before discussions at SCICOM. The membership of the Business Group reflects the structures of SCICOM, particularly Steering Group Chairs and leaders of Strategic Initiatives. Additional membership must be considered by SCICOM. As the members rotate off their respective responsibilities the incoming leaders will also take their seat at the Business Group.
SCICOM Steering Groups
Five Steering Groups are set up and report directly to SCICOM. Three of these Steering Groups are aligned with the Science Plan and two will lead horizontal integrative programmes. SCICOM has appointed the following ICES scientists as Chair of these Steering Groups.
- Steering Group on Ecosystem Functions (SSGEF)
Chair: Graham Pierce (UK)
Term of office: January 2012-December 2014
- Steering Group on Human Interactions on Ecosystems (SSGHIE)
Chair: Erik Olsen (Norway)
Term of office: October 2009–December 2012.
- Steering Group on Regional Sea Programmes (SSGRSP)
Chair: Yvonne Walther, Sweden
Term of office: May 2009–December 2012.
- Steering Group on Ecosystem Surveys Science and Technology (SSGESST)
Chair: Bill Karp, USA
Term of office: May 2009–December 2012.
Science Expert Groups have been allocated to one of the five SCICOM Groups. An overview of the allocation of Science Expert Groups can be seen here. Although each Expert Group will have a ‘parent’ Steering Group for management purposes, each Steering Group can propose ToRs for any Science Expert Group.
The Steering Group Chairs appointed by SCICOM will be members of SCICOM during their term of office as Steering Group Chairs. The core membership of the Steering Groups will consist of at least two SCICOM members and a number of Expert Group Chairs. Additional experts can be invited to participate in Steering Group meetings. The Steering Group meetings at the ASC will be open to participation of all ASC participants.
The Steering Groups will meet once a year at the ASC and in addition will meet by correspondence and web conference as needed.
SCICOM Operational Groups
Four groups are set up and report directly to SCICOM, but will also work closely with the Advisory Services. These groups will be responsible for advising SCICOM and ACOM on Publication and Communication; Training: Annual Science Conference (ASC); and Data and Information Management. SCICOM has appointed the following ICES scientists as chair of these Operational Groups:
- Training
Chair: Steve Cadrin (US)
Term of office: January 2011 – December 2013.
- ASC Theme Sessions
Membership: Steering Group Chairs and Host Country representatives (annual membership)
- Working Group on Data and Information Management (WGDIM)
Co-Chairs: Helge Sagen (Norway) and Ingeborg de Boois (Netherlands)
Strategic Initiatives
In 2010, three Strategic Initiatives and one Steering Group were established:
ACOM/SCICOM Strategic Initiative on Stock Assessment Methods (SISAM) chaired by Mark Dickey-Collas (Netherlands) and Steve Cadrin (USA)
ACOM/SCICOM Strategic Initiative on Biodiversity Science and Advice (SIBAS) chaired by Henn Ojaveer (Estonia, SCICOM) and Han Lindeboom(the Netherlands, ACOM)
ACOM/SCICOM Strategic Initiative on Area-Based Science and management (SIASM) chaired by Eugene Nixon (Ireland) and Erik Olsen (Norway)
ACOM/SCICOM Marine Strategy Framework Directive Steering Group (STGMSFD), chaired by Eugene Nixon (Ireland) and Yvonne Walther (Sweden)
In 2011 SCICOM established the ICES-PICES Strategic Initiative on Climate Change Impacts on Marine Ecosystems (SSICCME), chaired by Anne Hollowed(USA, PICES) and Brian MacKenzie(Denmark, ICES)
