ACOM - Advisory Committee


The ICES Council has delegated its advisory authority to the Advisory Committee. This Committee shall, in accordance with the Advisory Plan, establish the mechanisms necessary to prepare and disseminate advice subject to a protocol satisfying the following criteria:

  1. Objectivity and integrity;
  2. Openness and transparency;
  3. Quality assurance and peer review;
  4. Integrated advice – based on an ecosystem approach;
  5. Efficiency and flexibility;
  6. National consensus.”

Therefore, the Advisory Committee is the sole competent body for ICES for scientific advice in support of the management of coastal and ocean resources and ecosystems.  It designs strategies and processes for preparation of advice, manage advisory processes, and create and deliver advice, subject to direction from the Council.   The content of scientific advice is solely ACOM’s responsibility not subject to modification by any other ICES entity. Furthermore, the Advisory Committee shall provide input to the science strategic discussions on advisory research needs.

The Committee works on the basis of scientific analysis prepared in the ICES expert groups and the advisory process include peer review of the analysis before it can be used as basis for the advice.

The Advisory Committee has one member from each member country under the direction of an independent chair appointed by the Council.

Meetings between ACOM and recipients of advice (MICC) and ACOM and the Regional Advisory Councils (MIRAC) are held each year to discuss issues of common interest between the different users of ICES advice. Reports of recent MICC and MIRAC meetings are available here.
