Vacancy for a Professional Officer

The ICES Secretariat in Copenhagen is seeking applications for the role of Professional Officer.

The Professional Officer will help strengthen technical and scientific input towards ICES scientific advice, including the development of new products and deliverables. The Professional Officer shall possess competences and strong analytical skills related to quantitative fish stocks assessment methods and project management. Furthermore, the Professional Officer shall have an understanding of underlying data needs, the integration of ecosystem and environmental drivers, and the translation of science to scientific advice.

The selected candidate will play a valuable role in developing scientific advice for fisheries and management policies and work with every level of the ICES community, including a wide network of international scientists, industry representatives, and decision makers.

Main responsibilities

  • Assist with the production of advice on fish stocks and work across the Secretariat on wide ranging integrated and strategic issues (Advice, Data, and Science departments)
  • Lead advisory processes assigned to the Professional Officer
  • Support the ICES advisory work in respect of fisheries advice
  • Support the development of fisheries advice in respect of integrated fisheries and marine environmental policies, specifically through integrated benchmarks.

Qualifications and experience

The position will be filled by a scientist with extensive work experience in quantitative fish stock assessment, with a strong fisheries background, or related environmental sciences, and the following qualifications:

  • A degree from a recognized university in a marine related science discipline or mathematics/statistics or similar qualifications
  • At least five years' professional experience, from relevant marine science research and/or an international organization
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams comprised of people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds providing fisheries and ecosystem advice
  • Experience in scientific analysis of fisheries data and quantitative fish stock assessment methods for both long-lived and short-lived fish species
  • Knowledge of the main international fisheries and ecosystem related policies
  • Strong attention to detail, computer literacy and programming skills.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, inclusive lunch breaks), for a four-year contract period starting preferably in early April 2018, or as soon as possible.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales.  Benefits similar to those paid by the UN organization are also available for eligible staff members (e.g. installation/repatriation, dependents' education, and home leave allowances). Furthermore, a tax-free pension scheme is available to which both the employee and ICES contribute.  The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the staff of the Secretariat.
