Vacancy for a Professional Officer

Applications are invited for a post as Professional Officer to assist with the strengthening of the technical and scientific input to ICES work, including the development of new products and deliverables.

​​​​The Professional Officer shall possess competences and strong analytical skills related to ecosystem and environmental issues including fisheries, as well as an understanding of underlying data needs. This is to support the implementation of the ICES Strategic Plan 2014–2018, and especially to technically support the integrated benchmarking process (a coordinated review of methods and data), and thus the further development of integrated advice, as well as the scoping of science and research needs, to support this process. This is in response to policy demands, work within ICES on integrated ecosystem assessments, and ecosystem overviews, interest from the recipients of ICES advice, and work within ICES to move actively towards a stronger integration of ecosystem considerations in its advice.

The post is based at the Council's Headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Main responsibilities of the post

  • Support the development of integrated advice in respect of integrated, fisheries and marine environmental policies, specifically through integrated benchmarks;
  • Provide initial data and analysis to assist the advisory work of ICES;
  • Assist with the environment and ecosystem related work in the Secretariat across the areas of Data, Science, and Advice;
  • Contribute to specific projects regarding marine science and policy, and ensure that project deliverables are linked to ICES priorities and are fed into the work of science and advisory expert groups.

Qualifications and experience

The position will be filled by a professional with extensive work experience in marine ecology, with strong fisheries background, or related environmental sciences, and the following qualifications:

  • A degree (PhD or equivalent) from a recognized university in a marine related science discipline or similar qualifications;
  • At least three years' professional experience, from relevant research and/or from an international organization relevant to the marine environment;
  • Experience in scientific analysis of environmental data relating to marine ecosystems;
  • Proven ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to work with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English, and excellent presentation skills;
  • Excellent computer literacy.

Terms of appointment

The position will be for an initial period of 4 years, starting preferably during December 2014, and with a possibility for prolongation for another 4 years.

Members of the Secretariat enjoy the privileges and immunities to which they are deemed to be entitled in line with ICES as an Intergovernmental Organization and pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the staff of the ICES Secretariat. Benefits similar to those paid by UN organizations are also available for eligible staff members (e.g. installation, dependents' education, repatriation allowances, and home leave). A pension scheme, or alternatively an investment scheme, is available to which both the incumbent and the Council contribute.
