Vacancy for an Editor in charge of publications

ICES seeks qualified applicants for the post of Editor in charge of ICES Publications. This is a one year, part-time maternity cover position based at the ICES Secretariat in Copenhagen, Denmark.

​​​​​Main responsibilities

  • Coordinate the editorial activities of all ICES publications. These include scientific grey literature publications and outreach material, as well as other ad-hoc publications as required
  • Conduct quality control of ICES grey literature publications; prepare manuscripts for publication, editing them for grammar, punctuation, formatting, and ICES editorial style, and corresponding with authors and editors on internal consistency and other issues
  • Allocate deadlines to editors and other copy-editors, taking into account the complexity of the work, identifying publications requiring special treatment and/or possible outsourcing, keeping within the annual budget with regard to production costs (design and printing) and editors
  • Serve as ICES contact for ICES Journal of Marine Science, to oversee and coordinate the Journal's editorial and publication activities in close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and the publisher, and to cooperate with ICES aministration on budgetary issues
  • Liaise between relevant ICES committee chairs, editors, the publishers, and all departments of the ICES Secretariat as required, including answering queries on status

Qualifications and experience

  • Completion of studies in English language from a business school or a recognized institution with proven high degree of English-language proficiency
  • Training in editing practices, publication production, or similar expertise
  • At least 5 years' experience in editing, including scientific subjects, publication production, and familiarity with international editorial and publishing conventions
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English (English as mother tongue an asset)
  • Knowledge of scientific terminology
  • As this is a locally-recruited position, qualified candidates must already have a valid Danish work permit

Terms of appointment

  • The part-time position (30 hours/week) is offered for a period of 1 year
  • The starting date is preferably not later than 4 January 2016
  • The place of work is ICES Secretariat in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • English is the working language in the Secretariat
  • The salary level is based on the UN C6 scale and will follow ICES terms and conditions. A pension scheme is available.
