Vacancy: ICES Professional Officer

​Applications are invited for the post of
Professional Officer based at the ICES Secretariat
in Copenhagen, Denmark.

​​​​​​​​​​​The Professional Officer will assist with the strengthening of the technical and scientific input to ICES work, including the development of new products and deliverables. 

Candidates should possess strong analytical skills related to quantitative fish stocks assessment methods and fisheries management strategies evaluations, as well as an understanding of underlying data needs and the integration of ecosystem and environmental drivers. 

This will support the implementation of the ICES Strategic Plan, 2014–2018 and foster the efficient use of resources and quality assurance.

Main responsibilities

  • ​Support ICES fisheries management advice   
  • Support the development of integrated fisheries management advice (integrated fisheries and marine environmental policies, specifically through integrated benchmarks)
  • ​Assist with the evaluation of fish stock assessment methods and management strategies across the areas of Advice, Data, and Science in the ICES Secretariat​.​

Qualifications and Experience

The position will be filled by a scientist with extensive work experience in quantitative fish stock assessment, a strong fisheries background, or related environmental sciences, as well as possesing the following:

  • A degree (PhD is desirable) from a recognized university in a marine related science discipline
    (or mathematics/statistics/similar qualifications)
  • At least five years' professional experience, from relevant research and/or an international organization relevant to the marine science
  • Experience in scientific analysis of fisheries data
  • Knowledge of the main international fisheries and ecosystem related policies
  • Excellent computer literacy and programming skills
  • Ability to work in a team and with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds

Terms of Appointment

The post is full time. The salary is based on but not identical to that of the United Nations P2 grade. It has annual seniority increases and is exempt from Danish income tax. A pension scheme is available. The post duration is four years with the possibility for a mutually agreed extension.  The start date is expected to be no later than 4 January 2016.
