ICES seeks qualified applicants for the post of Finance Officer in the Secretariat in Copenhagen.
ICES is an intergovernmental organisation that coordinates and promotes marine research in the North Atlantic and adjacent areas. With 53 staff members, the Secretariat acts as a meeting point for a community of more than 4000 marine scientists from 20 countries, and about 350 institutes around the North Atlantic, North Sea, and Baltic Sea. Scientists working through ICES gather information about the marine ecosystem to fill gaps in existing knowledge, and to develop scientific information into unbiased, non-political advice. Our advice is used by the 20 member countries which fund and support ICES, and by international commissions, and helps them to manage the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas.
ICES cooperates with other relevant international research organizations and marine science networks in Europe and maintains financial agreements and funded projects with these organizations.
Elaborate proposed budgets and forecast budget
Approve expenses prior to bank transfers
Budget control and cross-checking of book-keeping, ensure adequate internal control procedures
Settle accounts (cash/bank statements) and prepare for auditors
Liaison with bank (interest rate, investment of ICES funds)
Update salary tables, and ensure timely payments of pensions
Preparation of special reports and documents
Supply relevant figures for department budgets and external agreements (Publications, Conferences, Symposia, Memoranda of Understandings, etc.)
Other administrative responsibilities
A relevant academic degree
At least five years' experience in accounting positions including the preparation of budget, budget control, etc.
Committed to working in a team
Ability to engage with individuals and groups at a variety of levels and from wide-ranging cultural and national backgrounds
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English); excellent presentation skills
Excellent computer literacy
The full time position is offered for a period of four years, with possibility for extension
The starting date is as soon as possible, and preferably not later than 1. August 2013
