The main aim of WKECOFRAME2 is to work out arrangements for a dialogue meeting in 2019 at which a framework (or frameworks) for providing ICES ecosystem advice will be created. Developing this framework will help ensure ICES evolves with the changing policy environment and that future advice outcomes are aligned with client expectations. Such a framework can introduce a more structured way of working
The first meeting of WKECOFRAME in 2017 prepared an overview of relevant international policy objectives and regional competencies with respect to the marine environment and clarified the role of ICES in the provision of advice. It also identified options to ensure ownership of the ecosystem advisory process by ICES Advisory Committee (ACOM) and its wider network.
WKECOFRAME2 will further analyze ICES role and position in ecosystem advice, catalogue the drivers needed to engage with the wider scientific community to strengthen the advice process and explore new ways of working. The workshop will help establish the scope of the dialogue meeting next year.
WKECOFRAME2 will offer an opportunity to help develop the ICES framework for giving ecosystem advice. Participation in the workshop by experts outside of or new to the ICES community involved with, for example, regional seas conventions or ecosystem based management is particularly encouraged. We are not asking the workshop participants to represent their organizations formally and expect that you can talk freely and without committing your organization.
Those interested in participating should register by contacting Jette Fredslund (firstname.lastname@example.org) at the ICES Secretariat. WKECOFRAME2 will meet in Copenhagen 22-24 May 2018.
