Working Group on Recruitment Forecasting in a Variable Environment

The Working Group on Recruitment Forecasting in a variable Environment (WGRFE) seeks to study the ecological underpinning of recruitment and to develop appropriate models which link fish recruitment to biotic and abiotic process drivers.

A good understanding of such drivers is necessary for the development of recruitment models which can accurately predict recruitment variability, including spikes (if possible).

WGRFE’s objectives run along two lines:

  • Studying existing theories underpinning recruitment processes, including challenges and caveats, across a broad spectrum of species and ecosystems

  • Improving the modeling and predictability of stock recruitment by:
    • Refining existing theories and, when necessary, developing new theories to explain recruitment variability
    • Identifying appropriate methodologies for detecting and validating environmental datasets in support of stock recruitment processes
    • Developing stock recruitment models with high predictive ability, which incorporate environmental drivers
