Background and role:
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography Data Centre (IEODC) was established in 1968 and it is responsible for archiving and distributing the data produced by the different research areas of the Institute. It acts as the Spanish representative at the international data exchange, and operates within the network of the national oceanographic data centres established by the IOC.
The IEODC freely exchanges its data with other national centres on the basis of bilateral agreements, but holds the right to charge marginal costs to other users (e.g. copy, material and postal expenses). The availablility of recent data is restricted and is subject to the authorisation of the scientists who were responsible for the collection and reports thereof.
National activities:
- Inventories: Cruises, Moored current meters and sea level
- Quality Control of Data: Hydrographic, Current Meter, Sea Level, Multibeam bathymetry
- Banking and distribution of Data: Hydrographic, Sea level, Current
- Member of the Spanish Sea Level Network Committee RIMA
- Development and implementation: Marine database and Spanish Geographical Information System with multibeam processing facilities
International activities:
- Marine Data Exchange: WDC-A, ICES, PSMSL
- Exchange of 'know-how' concerning the acquisition and processing of multibeam data with USGS and WHOI
- National Coordinator: IOC/IODE
- Member of Working group on Marine data Management: ICES
- Participation in International Projects: MEDATLAS, INTERRIDGE and TEIDE.
- Collaboration with international programmes: WOCE, TOGA, GLOSS
- Delegate of international programmes: GOOS
- Co-responsible for data management for MAST project: CANIGO
Plans for New Activities
- Multibeam data exchange
- Developmet of Software for Quality Control of Data: New parameters
- Developemt and implementation of new databases: Time series (sea level, meteorology and current), geological and geophysical
- Develpment of a multibeam gridded database: in connection with IHM and related with the Spanish Exclusive Econonmic Zone Program (SEEZ)
- Banking and data distribution: Marine geological and geophysical
- Editing Atlas on CD-ROM and/or paper: Climatology (Mediterranean), Multibeam bathymetry (SEEZ)
- Participation in MAST programmes: Qualify and banking marine data (MED-II), qualify and elaboration of multibeam cartography
- Collaboration in operational projects: GOOS, MEDGLOSS
- Creation of a Web site: with the results of the projects (RIMA and SEEZ and others)
- Creation of an ftp site: for distribution of data
- Expand the IEO network between laboratories:
- 1 Intel server running under Windows-NT in some laboratories for ecology
- 1 UNIX server in Madrid (Corazon de Maria) for hydrography and geophysics
Data/Information products (some to be developed):
- Inventories: Cruises, tracks and time series in paper list, map and electronic media
- Statistical results: in graphs and electronic media (to be developed)
- Data: in electronic media (to be developed)
General Description of Data Banks:
- Hydrography In the frame of the MEDATLAS project, IEO have developed quality control software running on PC under DOS, based on the IOC/CEC Manual of Quality Control Procedures for Validation of Oceangraphic Data. Commercial software.
- Ecology: Last year in the IEO a dtabase has been developed and implemented using the Oracle RDBMS on a Intel server under Windows NT
- Sea Level: TOGA Procedures running on a PC under DOS
- Current Meters: Inventory, time series analysis (filter, spectra, tides) and Graph running on a PC under DOS
- Geophysics: Simrad NEPTUNE software for multibeam bathymetry quality control, gridded with the IRAP software and mapping with IBERGIS software running in a SUN workstation
- Network:
- 1 Intel server under Windows-NT in ach laboratory for ecology
- 1 UNIX server in Madrid (Corazon de Maria) for hydrography and geophysics
- 1 Internet server in the Canaries
- 1 Internet Intel server under Windows-NT
Data holdings:
- ROSCOP: Spanish cruises on paper and electronic media
- Oceanography and biology: Bottles and CTD from IEO cruises on electronic media (some in hard copy)
