Background and role:
NOD is established as a part of the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) with support from the University of Bergen.The main task of NOD is to provide data and information from coastal and ocean areas which are of particular interest to Norway.

National activities:
Archiving of oceanographic data,and information about available data, observed by Norwegian institutions.
User services.

International activities:
International data exchange.

Plans for new activities:
There is a plan to increase the activity and to be a data center for all marine data. The data centre also has a plan to publish all data from standard sections and fixed stations on WWW from 1998.

Observed data and/or calculated values on printouts or electronic exchange media.

General description of the data bank:
The data system is a networked UNIX system.An integrated data base, TINDOR, based on the INGRES-system, is installed. All data of IMR and NOD will be incorporated in TINDOR upon completion of quality control.
