ICES Awards

The Merit and Service Awards were announced during the Closing Session. Here are the winners:

Best Poster
F:43  “From Seals to cells: Protein biomarkers to reveal effects of persistent pollutants on primary hepatocytes of Phoca vitulina
Vera Korff
Co-authors: Annika Behr, Antonia Wargel, Kristinia Lehnert, Ursula Seibert, Veronika Hellwig.

The poster provided a clear and simple description of purpose, experiments, results and outcomes.  By using a minimum amount of text in combination with effective illustrations, the winner, who ensure she could be identified even after the open session by placing her photograph in the upper corner of the poster, appealed to onlookers by peaking their interest and providing them with the simple message “I have some done some interesting research, come talk to me”.

Best Presentation
A:04  “Towards operational management of pelagic ecosystems”
Patrick Lehodey

Patrick presented the audience with a stimulation use of satellite data and operational ocean models for understanding the dynamics and movements of mid-trophic level organisms.  Using an overlay of environment and satellite tracks of the movement of animals he demonstrated that innovative use of these different sources of information can serve the near-real time management and monitoring of organisms, with good confidence.  This presentation provided a good illustration of how basic science is essential in the development of sound advice.

Best Newcomer
K:07 “Spreading and reproduction limitations of the American comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Baltic Sea”
Maiju Lehtiniemi
Co-authors: Jamileh Javidpour, Andreas Lehmann, and Kai Myrberg

The study nicely combined a physical drift model and laboratory studies of the reproductive and survival tolerances at different temperatures and salinities to investigate the colonization potential of the comb jelly in northern parts of the Baltic Sea.  The conclusion was that this is unlikely to occur now and even less so under warming climatic conditions as a result of counteracting effects of temperature and salinity.  The winner presented the talk with great clarity using slides that were simple and illustrative, and responses to questions were informative and focused.

‘Out of the Box’ Award
“EcoOcean project” for the most original contribution at the 2010 ASC

Service Awards:
Mark Dickey-Collas, outgoing Chair of SSGSUE
Gerd Kraus, outgoing Chair of the Training Group
Mike Sissenwine, outgoing ACOM Chair
Mark Tasker, outgoing ACOM Vice Chair

Special Award:
Hans Lassen, retiring Head of ICES Advisory Programme

The Outstanding Achievement Award was announced during the Opening session.

Outstanding Achievement Award:

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!
