ICES President - Joe Horwood

At the 94th Statutory Meeting of the ICES Council Dr Joe Horwood was elected President for the next three year term to succeed Dr Michael Sissenwine.

Joe Horwood is Deputy Chief Executive of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' marine science agency, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), Lowestoft, England, and he is also Defra's chief fisheries scientist.

Joe Horwood has been associated with ICES from the early 1970s, having attended a range of expert committees, and has served on ICES Advisory Committee for Fisheries Management and the Council.

He has published in a range of marine science areas, including applied and mathematical hydrodynamics, theoretical population dynamics, ecosystem modelling and fisheries, and has written books on sei and minke whales. Such width will be helpful in appreciating the wide scope of ICES science activities.

Joe Horwood said "During the next few years ICES will face some challenges as it seeks to reposition its Strategy, and the Science and Advisory processes and structures, in order to better address the needs of all those interested in, and dependent upon, the North Atlantic and its adjacent Seas. There is an increasing focus on the Seas, and governments will look to ICES to support their proper governance and management. If young marine scientists want to contribute to the better management of the Seas, through good quality impartial science, then they will find many open doors at ICES."
