The General Secretary: Gerd Hubold

On February 1 2006 , ICES welcomed Gerd Hubold as the new General Secretary. Gerd takes over the reins from David Griffith who is starting a well-earned retirement now that his six-year term has come to an end.

Gerd is a German fisheries biologist with a marine ecology background. His research on pelagic ecosystems has taken him from Greenland and the North Sea down to the South Atlantic and into the Antarctic Ocean .

He has been involved with ICES for a number of years, most recently as an ICES German Delegate (since 1999) and Chair of MCAP (Management Committee for the Advisory Process, 2000-2003), which is the ICES committee that manages and steers all ICES advisory work.

He has also held a number of other positions on international scientific bodies including SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and he had been closely involved with the work of the Marine Stewardship Council (2001-2004).

Gerd began his scientific career at Kiel University working on the growth of North Sea herring. He then worked in Brazil (1977-1982) completing a PhD on the early life history of Brazilian anchovy in 1982 at Kiel University.

He then spent close to a decade working on the ecology of Antarctic fish; for the first three years as a research assistant at the Alfred Wegener Institut for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven and subsequently as an assistant Professor at the Institute for Polar Ecology of Kiel University.

In 1991 he moved to the Sea Fisheries Institute at the German Federal Research Center for Fisheries in Hamburg (BFAFI) to take up the position of Director which he has held until moving to ICES.

Gerd’s involvement with ICES has included: membership of the Pelagic Fish Committee, the Biological Oceanography Committee, and the Resource Management Committee; being a German ICES Delegate 1999-2005; and being Chair of MCAP (2000-2003).

Gerd is enthusiastic about the ongoing process of making ICES more open and transparent with greater opportunities for stakeholder involvement. He is also committed to maintaining ICES scientific integrity and making sure that ICES is in a strong position to meet the ever-increasing demand for advice on the state of Northeast Atlantic Ecosystems.
